When it comes to refinishing and installation how to find the right person? Real hardwood floor man vs. wanna be hardwood floor man. How to identify a qualified hardwood floor technician?
If a man says: ‘I’m a hardwood floor installer’ specific questions to ask are:
- How many years of experience you have in refinishing?
- Who did you apprentice under? Who thought you the trade?
- How many years did you apprentice with this company/or school?
- May I have 3 referrals (clients and past employers/school)?
The truth is a ‘very good hardwood floor technician’ is not easy to find! The problem is if you ask contractors, general contractors, and even floor peoples if they know about hardwood floors a lot of them will say, yes, when in reality they don’t know about hardwood, or they don’t know how to do it properly.
The handyman warning - there’s an old expression that people must keep in mind which is ‘a dabbler in all, a master of none’ hardwood flooring is an ART and sometimes a handyman can do a little drywall, electrical or painting, remember, hardwood flooring is a finished product and you need to do the job correctly in order for the product to appear at its best, and last for many years.
The handyman situation comes down to hire a hardwood floor specialist one who knows about wood inside and out. We, at Royal Hardwood Floors have devoted our entire life to this craftmanship we custom tailor hardwood floors and love what we do. What you don’t want is a floor guy that does cement ceramic carpet and hardwood, or someone that one week is doing electrical and the next week plumbing.
